What is VOIP?
VoIP stands for "Voice over IP" or "Voice over Internet Protocol." It is a new way of making and receiving phone calls through your high speed Internet connection (broadband). VOIP offers consumers the benefit of calling – locally and long distance – for less money, with high quality and reliable connections and more features than many traditional phone service offerings.
What Do I need to use VOIP?
In order to render phone service at substantial savings you must have a high speed internet connection with at least 90kbps of upload speed. We do not recommend the use of satellite due to the issue of time delay between your modem and outer-space. VOIP will work over your standard analog telephones when plugged into our telephone adapter
What connections will Ziptel work with?
Ziptel is compatible with high-speed Internet services such as DSL or Cable including Zipnet.us. Satellite Internet connections are not recommended for Ziptel's Voice over IP Service as there may be some speed issues that are inherent to satellite connections or line of sight issues that could affect audio quality when making calls. Ziptel's Voice over IP Service requires 90 kbps of consistent upload/download speed to make and receive phone calls.
Will my dial-up connection work with Ziptel?
No. You must use a broadband or high speed internet connection for VOIP to work.
Do you have DSL?
If you use DSL for high speed internet you must keep your existing phone number to maintain your high-speed connection. You can transfer your DSL service to another phone line with your current carrier, or you can switch to Zipnet.us for high speed internet. We can accommodate you either way.
Can I keep my current telephone number if I switch to Ziptel?
Currently we can not port your existing telephone number. However, by the end of July this service will be available.
Can I use my current phone?
Yes. Ziptel works with most phones designed for residential use, as long as they're connected to the phone adaptor provided by Ziptel.
Can I get an unlisted telephone number?
Unlisted telephone numbers are available, but must be requested when signing up for service.
Do I need a computer to use Ziptel’s service?
No. The phone adaptor we provide connects directly to a high speed or broadband connection. A computer is not necessary with the exception of changing your address associated with the adaptor for 911 services. Please refer to Terms and Conditions.
If I use a computer or multiple computers can I use Ziptel?
Yes. If you are using a computer or computers in conjunction with the Ziptel service you will need to purchase a router. A router is a device that allows multiple computers and phone adaptors to share one internet connection. Routers generally cost between $40 and $80.
Can I use my computer and talk on the phone at the same time?
Yes. Your Ziptel adaptor works independently of your computer, so you can make and receive calls.
Is the sound quality the same as a regular phone line?
Because signals are digitally transmitted and received the quality of VOIP may very well exceed your current phone. The quality is at least as good as a cell phone, usually better!
Is Internet service included?
No. Your high speed or broadband connection is separate from Ziptel. Ziptel is available at a discounted rate when Zipnet is purchased concurrently.
If I am using a router are there any special settings for the Ziptel Adaptor?
Generally no. Most routers are setup with DHCP which is needed for the adaptor. However, in the case of a locked down network you will need to turn on DHCP or place a Network Switch in front of the router. You will then plug the router and adapter into the switch. This will allow you to keep your network locked down with DHCP turned off.
